I still have this problem...

Renaming all dot-files in $HOME I can only login if I use icewm as window manager. All the other will fail. With icewm I can run some programs, while attempting to open others will log me out. Again, this is for all users. Programs that will crash the window manager are: gv, texmaker, skype, avidemux, etc. Programs that will not crash the window manager are: xterm, firefox/iceweasel, thunderbird/icedove, gimp, etc.

I was hoping that upgrading further will be of some help, so I went ahead from stable to testing but I face the same problems still.

I don't understand this dbus thing.

My only options (if nobody can come with some) are to strip out everything but the bare packages and then reinstall and if this fails, to do a clean install...

Anyone has any ideas?

To repeate, after a distupgrade from old-stable to stable I can't login at the kdm prompt. I am logged out. The errors suggest something with dbus daemon, whatever that may be.
