Installing both can lead to conflicts. I would recommend using one or the other. I haven't put NB on my Debian box yet, but I'll give it a shot and report back. I did do a pkg install of the java (oracle) packages, so that could also make a difference.

Hello list,
I installed netbeans from dvd image of debian 7.1 (amd64) and also
downloaded netbeans from their site and installed it. But whenever I
click on new project, the dialogue opens but there is nothing to select.
