The version of the -486 flavour of the kernel is the same as the other
flavours. It is just built with different options, so that it does not
require features available only on more recent processors. Also they do
not support SMP, thus won't take advantage of hyperthreading or multi-core.

May I ask what do you expect from a -686 kernel ?

I think I read that the rationale for this is that optimizations for 686
on a non PAE capable CPU are likely to provide very limited improvements.
