I don't want to lead you up the wrong path but there is this:

I do not use GNOME but believe there is a fallback mode; you could
investigate using it. Providing the card with more memory via the BIOS
is also an option,

Thanks Brian.  This gives me a lot to chew on, assuming a reinstall doesn't clear the problem.
