I use vga=791 on my kernel command line. I think that is, or soon will
be depreciated but I find that method gives me what I want as far as
the terminal goes.

GRUB_GFXMODE=????x???? in grub.cfg is the way to configure it now but I
haven't found a setting that suits me, yet.
