Right now, both nouveau and nvidia load on boot even though nouveau is blacklisted in the nividia conf file in modprobe.d.  startx fails.  I'm thinking maybe my initrd might need to be redone, but I'm going to try a minimal xorg.conf first.  One thing at a time and keep it simple.
