Making up prefixes for something which has always been that way is
confusing.
It's simple. When dealing with computers, it's powers of 2. When
dealing with distances, it's powers of 10.

Actually, when dealing with distances, it's not powers of 10, it factors
of 12, (inches/foot) 3, (feet.yard) and 5280 (ft/mile).
