$ ls -l /dev/sdb
brw-rw---T 1 root floppy 8, 16 ian 17 11:08 /dev/sdb

As long as the user is member of 'floppy' any tool will work. As far as 
I recall 'dd' has been replaced by 'cp' because due to the default small 
block size (512 B?) it is slower. The 'cp' command is just simpler.
