I've only started the gui once or twice before and its been a while
but I think it did work as expected.

I normally do things with aptitude as mentioned in OP.

No, should that be necessary?

And its several years old.  Plus, the fix mentioned there does not
apply here since there is no file named /var/run/synaptic*.socket  present to
delete. 

Thanks for the effort though.

For further input, I did reboot for other reasons and kind of thought
that might change things with synaptic too, but it didn't.  Well, it
does show a bit less resource usage but still over 80%.

Oddly, the update manager starts and runs with no problems, and I think
that also uses synaptic doesn't it?
