Thank you Jochen for putting me on the right track.
The auto fsck/root problem (if ever encountered) could be got around by
using the Wheezy live CD/USB[*1] which is the path I chose thanks to
your chroot tip.
I had tried to backport from Wheezy but it became to complicated and
would probably have broken Squeeze updates.

[*1] a grub entry can be added for convenience, or run in a chroot (as
you suggested)
