Previously I used my Nokia N900 to read ebooks but since I bought my Kindle Touch I was enjoying my reading a lot more.

With Calibre I have no problems converting epubs to mobi format and sometimes I even have success converting pdf's to mobi format.

Communication with the Kindle from Debian has been without a problem. I use Calibre on a Macbook as well as on my Debian computers.
