firefox error libstdc++.so.6: cannot open

Greetings,

installed firefox but when it is run it falls over with error message :

firefox: error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

This file is at   /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6 -> libstdc++.so.6.0.13

Tried putting a symlink in /lib /usr/local/lib and the main firefox directory which has the firefox files, /opt/firefoxx/firefox . The symlink is

libstdc++.so.6 -> /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6.0.13

None of the symlinks have worked yet, same error message. It is an amd64 system.

Any ideas on how to cause firefox 17.0 on debian squeeze to pickup the "missing"
library ?

Thanks.
