There are things to like about Xfce, LXDE, MATE, and others, but I have not heard of anyone trying Cinnamon. As far as I understand, Cinnamon requires the same hardware acceleration as gnome-shell, so you will probably have as much trouble running it.

The problem is not with the video drivers, it's with GNOME itself. Currently, on my machine, GNOME 3 is in an inconsistent state, and I am waiting for ver. 3.4 to stabilize (migrate down to Wheezy) before I attempt to fix it.
The Ubuntu bunch can run Cinnamon, but AFAIK, no one has packaged it for Debian. It's a work-in-progress. You can track progress here: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=657395
Thanks for your help. I think I will exercise patience and wait for Debian to add it into it's own repositories before I install it on hardware.
I have now installed both Mint and Mint Debian Edition in VMs and I have discovered that Mint (Ubuntu) with Cinnamon does not interact well with Virtualbox. My next thing to try is to use VMWare instead of Virtualbox.
Thanks again! Mark
