I assume you mean "switching USB ports, and removing other USB devices

Run vlc with the standard interface.
Use "cvlc" to use vlc without a GUI

Depends on how the buses are managed.
Is this a Nvidia video device?
If so which driver are you using?
All I can think of at this point is that it "might" be a video driver
problem. The camera itself is normally well supported.
