pulseaudio --kill

It might not really remove all the bad behaviour that ships with PA, but
anyway, try to kill PA and then use alsamixer again.
When I used Debian testing I replaced pulseaudio by a dummy package.

Again, google for "pulseaudio AC'97 Audio Controller" and similar,
perhaps somebody solved the same issue you have.
