PCIe x4, or x8?
Either. x1 would also be fine (if such a SAS HBA exists). I'd rather
avoid x16.
How many SAS ports? Internal or external? Or both?
At least 1 internal.
Discrete or multilane connectors?
Either. I need to connect to one internal SAS drive.
Pick from the cacheless LSI cards at Newegg. They all work with Debian
6 "OOTB".
OK.
What is your definition of "out of the box" in this case?
The hardware is supported by the Debian installer.

OK.
