Nvidia driver fails to compile on kernel 3.X

Hi I'm starting to get more that a bit hacked off.
The gnome shell requires with the onboard radeon graphics card the ATI driver to run normally,
however the ATI proprietary driver is unstable on kernel 3.0 and 3.1.
So I've gone the Nvidia route, there is only one slot width on the mobo between the pci-e slot and
adjacent pci slots, whic are occupied, so no large heatsinks. I ended up with a GT520 $50.
I cannot get the nvidia driver to build, so I tried using the nvidia installer
290.10.run
It wont install if I have X running, so into a console and go to init 1.
damn thing doesn't like that either.
next reboot, login and kill gdm3... go to a console run NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-290.10.run
and the damn thing segfaults. It wont build from the /usr/src/nvidia direcory, as it wants the kernel
config file.
Why is it other distros have gnome3 and the shell running normally without having to load the proprietary
drivers ?

I like debian, but I pulling my hair out trying to get gnome-shell to run and be stable.

If anyone tries todays build of wheezy, dont bother, it can't find the network with dhcp.

Anyone got a magic wand, mines run out of whizz
