I've had a lot of problems with this, but first check the levels from each device.
load gnomealsa mixer.
You should then see each device and increase the audio level to and from each.
For some daft reason the intial level settings after loading pulseaudio is zero.
When thats up OK check pachooser from the right sound device.
IMO the person who initialised pulseaudio works for microsoft.
