How to kill a dead loop program?

Hi,
  rred coming from apt lost itself in my box. The apt package version
is 0.8.15.8. The process in ps axfl is:
0     0 10270     1  20   0  58428   620 ?      R    ?        3821:44
/usr/lib/apt/methods/rred
  Now I cannot kill it, kill -9 did work, either. And it uses 100% of
a cpu core.
  What should I do if I do not want a reboot?
