Installer manual puts another one-liner:

Anyway, if you experienced an error when installing from whatever source, 
you can jump to console logging to check what's happening.

I think that's irrelevant for the installer. You waste a DVD but that's 
all :-)

The first time I installed lenny the installer gave me "media reading 
errors" and "media not found" messages, randomly... not sure why. I had 
to insist (retry) in some steps in order to get the system installed.
