This kind of problem is when a USB-ethernet plug-in device is
priceless. (And less than $30, retail). The amount of time I've saved
on various hardware and OS combinations by using an older such device
until the installation kernel is loaded well justifies keeping one in
my toolkit and keeping it in my DHCP reservation tables for just such
installations.
