For the ext3 filesystem, see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ext3#Size_limits.

For the kernel, 32-bit versus 64-bit, I'm not sure, but I can tell you that
hardware limits can get in the way long before software limits do. For
example, the AMD 64-bit procs has a 52-bit limit on the physical memory,
and a 48-bit limit on the virtual address space. This doesn't eddress
"maximum file size" though, so hopefully someone else here can answer that.
