I can't find, at the moment, what you're referring to, but I did just
find the cause of my headache: a preferences file containing pins. This
had been sitting there for months (at least), and causing no trouble at
all, but moving it away makes everything work again. The file had this:

Package:	*
#Pin:		origin localhost:9999/multimedia
Pin:		origin www.debian-multimedia.org
Pin-Priority:	200

Package:	*
#Pin:		origin localhost:9999/debian
Pin:		origin localhost
Pin-Priority:	600

I still have no idea what's going on here, but at least my package
management is currently functional. Thanks for the help.
