Thank you for your advice.  What I installed was the 'hibernate'
package.  As you suggested I purged it.  However, it made no difference;
I still have the same annoying glitch in the boot process.

All I can think of is that when I 'hibernated' the computer and then
'unhibernated' it, somewhere in the process something was deleted,
thereby causing the glitch.  I have unfortunately no idea how to correct it.
