Your solution seems to have worked.

Possibly I had added the line in lenny but it got lost in squeeze due to the upgrade from grub to grub2.

Also my local changes to /usr/share/initramfs-tools/scripts/local-top/mdadm seem to be unnecessary.

BTW, could someone explain the difference between GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT and GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX in /etc/default/grub?
