Installing the Debian sid package is the easiest way to go. At least one
user on that thread indicates it works, at least for now. It's likely that
when/if Ubuntu issues an update for the issue, it will have a greater version
number so APT won't complain about upgrading to it.

For a slightly more correct way, you could take the Debian source package,
tweak the version in debian/changelog, and rebuild it in a lucid environment,
test, and upload to your own ppa and share the ppa URL in the bug discussion.

For building in a chroot, pbuilder and cowbuilder can help. For building in
a virtual machine, qemubuilder can help. For testing, piuparts and lintian
can do some checks. For the version you want to use, probably something like
1.16-0.1ubuntu~mightydreams.ppa-1 which will be greater than the debian sid
version, less than the next debian sid version (1.16-0.2 [NMU] or 1.16-1),
and less than likely ubuntu versions (1.16-0.1ubuntu1 or 1.16-0ubuntu1). I
haven't looked at ubuntu version stings in a while, so I could be wrong there
though.

As far as a recommendation, I'd think installing the sid version using dpkg,
and then watching both the specific bug you are encountering and the package
in general would be good. You don't want to "upgrade" to a version that
still has your bug, but you do want to move to an official lucid package
ASAP.

Whatever you do, don't mix Debian and Ubuntu APT repositories unless you
consider yourself an expert and feel you can use pinning to resolve any
situations you get yourself into.
