You are not the only one; from what I've seen, most KDE users suffer from it! You can disable strigi/akonadi (they both need disabling) in the KDE advanced settings. You can also turn off the running services. After disabling them I did see an improvement, but it was still far too sluggish compared with KDE3, so I have to confess I went to xfce4 instead...
