USB ports can make use of (AFAIK) three different modules: "ohci_hcd" -
loaded for VIA and Intel host controllers-, "uhci_hcd" -loaded for NEC 
based ones- (USB 1.1) and "ehci_hcd" (USB 2.0). 

The only way I'm aware to enforce the use or one of them is by loading/
unloading the "offending" modules, for example:

# Unload ehci
modprobe -r ehci_hcd
