Okay, so you're probably in text mode before i915 loads, which is good.

Don't think so, unless vesafb (CONFIG_FB_VESA) is also built into the
kernel (vesafb cannot be built as a module).

Is CONFIG_FRAMEBUFFER_CONSOLE_DETECT_PRIMARY set?
