The problem was Privoxy. There is a 'deanimate-gifs' setting and this was
the culprit. Adding my web site to the list of exceptions has cured the
problem.

Setting up a new browser profile cured the problem temporarily until I
remembered that I hadn't set the proxy. Doing that, which then routes
everything through Privoxy, brought the problem back but I hadn't realised
that until I tried disabling Privoxy today.

Ah well we live and learn. Well, I learn until I forget. (easy at my
age) :-))

Thanks to Sven and Camaleon for trying. Special thanks to Camaleon for
seeming very determined to solve my problem. :-))
