Well that's good! It's what I would expect it to do if it didn't find the boot partition specified.

You say Sda1 is the Win 98 OS In question? Are you certain of this??

the partitions on the hda device boot with (hd0,#) and there are no other disk drives??

grub enters grub's command line interface
