Jumping in, but I did not read the complet thread,so, forgive me if I am saying something stupide: In KDE, so it may be the same in gnome; Shit+ctr+NumLock toggle the numpad accessibility. ie, you can press the num key, light goes on or off, but the numpad does not work until you press again the 3 keys sequence.
