Mmm... I'm not planning to move into gnome shell (still) so having to 
switch into that just to get more "accessibility" or "higher levels of 
configurability" would be a big handicap.

Thanks... that gnome bug (#587750) seems to be key:

Fortunately, there is no mention for binding "gdmsetup" within gnome 
shell :-)
