Using ssh ...
root@dalton:~# dpkg -l telnetd
Desired=Unknown/Install/Remove/Purge/Hold
| Status=Not/Inst/Conf-files/Unpacked/halF-conf/Half-inst/trig-aWait/Trig-pend
|/ Err?=(none)/Reinst-required (Status,Err: uppercase=bad)
||/ Name           Version        Description
+++-==============-==============-============================================
ii telnetd 0.17-36 The telnet server

... and "telnet localhost" works there.

Well yes, its the connection from another machine
that is blocked ... but not according to this.
root@dalton:~# cat /etc/shorewall/policy | grep vpn
# Policies for traffic originating in the vpn zone.
vpn             all             ACCEPT
root@dalton:~# cat /etc/inetd.conf | grep telnetd
telnet stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd /usr/sbin/in.tel
netd

Seems I need to learn how to examine the iptables
directly and learn more about pam.
