Honestly, though, how often does that happen?
It happened to me once, and that was enough to take appropriate measures.
Maybe it's because I "just" run a workstation, or maybe because disks are so huge nowadays, or I'm just a fool, but I leave var/ under / so anything catastrophic as to trash var/ will best be solved by a complete reinstall.
I leave /var in a separate partition, only because I cut my teeth on Unix/Linux back in the days when filling / or /var would cause a system crash.
