This is all explained in http://www.wowway.com/~zlinuxman/Kernel.htm
In particular, review Step 10.

The author is aware of this problem and has it on his "to do" list.

I don't know which search keywords you used, but I tried

   Debian "GNU/Linux" custom kernel "kernel-package" "make-kpkg" compile

as my search keywords on Yahoo advanced search and the above web page
showed up on the first page. It doesn't do well at all on Google web
searches though. Perhaps someone with web page experience can provide
me with some pointers as to how I can make the page more visible to
Google searches.

The document is rather long, but thorough in its treatment of the subject.
At least that was my goal.

It sounds to me like you want to get pristine kernel sources directly
from kernel.org and compile them and run them on a Debian system.
I've never done that, but others tell me that they do it. Of course,
this is not supported by Debian. But why don't you just install the
appropriate firmware package on Debian? Are you saying that the bug is
fixed in newer kernel images from kernel.org that Debian has not
packaged yet?
