DE = Desktop Environment (GNOME, KDE, XFCE, etc.)
WM = Window Manager

A Desktop Environment is also sometimes referred to as a Session Manager.
In the X Window System, a Window Manager is almost a requirement. A
Session Manager is optional. The Window Manager used in the GNOME
Desktop Environment is metacity.
