/etc/init.d/network
does not exist. If you have Network Manager with its default setup,
/etc/init.d/networking restart
will not restart your network because your nics will not be defined in
/etc/network/interfaces
so you have to use
/etc/init.d/network-manager restart
or
invoke-rc.d network-manager restart
or
service network-manager restart
