I too recently had problems printing with CUPS on a fully updated Lenny, 
although it (CUPS) had been working perfectly for years.  I too was trying to 
print a pdf at the time.

I solved it by purge - clean - install.

I got the impression that some of the dependencies that were installed were 
different from those that were purged.  (I had not kept a list).  So I 
concluded that a recent update had broken CUPS's dependencies.
