I don't know about the rest of the world. but I found that
http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/i386/release-notes/ch-upgrading.en.html in relese notes is worth to read. it wouldn't be there for no purposes. I never had problem upgrading from sarge --> etch --> lenny.
