Cannot start X

When I issue `startx`, X starts up in an immediately locked up state.
I have to use Alt-SysRq-E to get out of the frozen X, at which point I
notice the console is logged out (or somehow non-usable), and there is
the following on the display:

(EE) Failed to load module "type 1" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) Failed to load module "freetype" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) Failed to load module "xtrap" (module does not exist, 0)
    get fences failed -1
    param: 6, val:0
    Setting master

hostname login: [1181.xxxxxx] ipw2200: Firmware error detected.
    Restarting

But it doesn't restart, I have to use Alt-SysRq-E, then log in again.
At this point the gpm functionality is gone -- no more mouse pointer
in the console. The last 12 lines of /var/log/Xorg.0.log are:

    (II) AIGLX: enabled GLX_MESA_copy_sub_buffer
(II) AIGLX: enabled GLX_SGI_swap_control and GLX_MESA_swap_control
(II) AIGLX: GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap backed by buffer objects
(II) AIGLX: Loaded and initialized /usr/lib/dri/i915_dri.so
(II) GLX: Initialized DRI2 GL provider for screen 0
(II) intel(0): Setting screen physical size to 270 x 203
    (II) intel(0): xf86UnbindGARTMemory: unbind key 0
    (II) intel(0): xf86UnbindGARTMemory: unbind key 1
    (II) intel(0): xf86UnbindGARTMemory: unbind key 2
    (II) intel(0): xf86UnbindGARTMemory: unbind key 3
    (II) intel(0): xf86UnbindGARTMemory: unbind key 4
(WW) intel(0): drmDropMaster failed: Invalid argument

Not sure exactly when the trouble began, as I mostly use the
console & haven't tried to start X in months. Perhaps this is
related to X problems others have described in recent posts?

I'm running Debian unstable.

TIA for any suggestions,

John
