Next installment:

I have installed Lenny, Icewm and idesk.  I shall follow Andrei's suggestions 
and also install nullmailer.  These saved about 6 seconds on the previous 
test (which was building up too much rubbish, so I started again).

Now I need a desktop manager.  I have been looking at the alternatives.  I 
would prefer auto-login to be available, and would like to pull in as few 
dependencies as possible.

Entrance seems to fill the bill.  _But_ Googling appears to suggest that it 
might be difficult to install on Debian.

Experiences, opinions and suggestions would be very gratefully received.
