First of all, I do apologize for posting on amd64 list, I was not sure about the scope of these two groups. Thank you for clarify.

I didn't have a chance to test the LVM snaphots, but I understand that If I snapshot the root (/) file system on to a new snapshot/backup logical volume and copy using dd copy and compressing, a tar file, etc., I would need to boot from a cd/dvd with LVM support in order to restore the original root file system (Debian Netinstall would do it, no biggie). I don't want that.

In my actual schema I've both /boot and / file systems mirrored with md devices, and grub is able to boot from them. I don't need to have a site support to load any media on the server if I want to synchronize the mirror backward. I'm looking for a similar schema with LVM, first I would need to encapsulate /boot file system under LVM and then find out if how to synchronize both file systems the other way around.
