Try editing /boot/grub/menu.lst
You'll have entries like this:
title Debian GNU/Linux, kernel 2.6.26-2-amd64
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.26-2-amd64 root=/dev/sda1 ro vga=ask
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.26-2-amd64
Look at the working 2.6.26-1 entry and then match the root= in 2.6.26-2 entry
accordingly. That should be it.
