It's solved. > I've restarted X (and the TV...) ... but I should have rebooted the computer before mailing... Now that I've rebooted, everything works again (in that the image is black and white :) ). What has changed that I can tell is that the output from "xrandr --prop" now lists 30.0 next to the display sizes where it was 25.0 earlier. So my quest towards colours continues. Martin
