Maestro-3i PCI Audio Accelerator [125d:1998] (rev 10)

I'm running lenny and sound IS working.

Recent versions of what? ... Alsa?
root@box:~# dpkg -l | grep alsa
ii alsa-base 1.0.17.dfsg-4 ALSA driver configuration files
ii alsa-utils 1.0.16-2 ALSA utilities

drwxr-xr-x 18 root root 4096 2008-02-05 22:28 alsa-firmware-1.0.16

IMHO, that should not be necessary.

root@box:~/maestro/backup# uname -a
Linux box 2.6.26-1-686 #1 SMP Thu Oct 9 15:18:09 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux

root@box:~/maestro/backup/alsa-firmware-1.0.16# ls maestro3/
fw_writer.c maestro3.h Makefile.am Makefile.in

After following some instructions -- sorry, would have to google for them
If I needed to do it again. :( -- I ended up with this:

root@box:~# ls /lib/firmware/
aica_firmware.bin digiface_firmware.bin ea emu korg
multiface_firmware.bin pcxhr turtlebeach asihpi
digiface_firmware_rev11.bin emagic ess mixart
multiface_firmware_rev11.bin sb16 vx

root@box:~# ls /lib/firmware/ess/
maestro3_assp_kernel.fw maestro3_assp_minisrc.fw

Does the OP get that?
