I remember more people complaining about performance problems with
radeon cards and kernel 2.6.29; see also the warning that Jan Willem
posted from his Xorg log:

(WW) RADEON(0): Direct rendering disabled

AFAIK, kernel 2.6.30 is supposed to fix these issues. The Debian kernel
team has recently made 2.6.30-rc5 kernel images available in
/dists/trunk, so you could test this yourself without having to compile
your own kernel:
