2 ways:
'ia' stands for Itanium (IIRC), Intel's try at a 64 bit chip.

Debian built a distro for both the Intel and AMD 64 bit chips. Everybody
liked AMD's chips better, so Intel started using the AMD instruction
set. So you can tell from history.
The installer will tell you if it doesn't care for your CPU, so you can
just boot install CDs until one works. :-)
