Are you sure about this? I get "permission denied" if I don't run 
ifup/ifdown as root.

> # ifconfig down eth0
> echo "go grab some coffee"
> # ifup eth0

Come on, how is the computer going to get coffee *without* the network?  
Obviously, first you need 'ifup eth0', then "go grab some coffee" and 
make sure opencoffee-server is up and running on your coffee machine :))
