This has been the default in mke2fs at least since Etch. Don't know
about older systems.

Note that you can use "tune2fs -O dir_index <device>" followed by
"e2fsck -D <device>" to add the desired feature to an existing
filesystem that has been created with an old version of mke2fs. If
you're not sure about the parameters of your filesystem, you can find
out with debugfs(8); use the "features" command at the debugfs prompt.
